In turn, cortisol resistance occurs when stress makes more cortisol and insulin to get the same blood sugar-regulating response. Dr. Patel states that people need to have control over cortisol.  

              Stress can be caused by internal stressors (emotional, chemical, toxins) or external stressors (people change how they feel about the stressor by reconditioning how they see the world). An abundance mindset first impacts a person’s overall health, physiology, and chemistry, then energy, cortisol level, state of the nervous system, and finally the immune, digestive, healing, and repair systems.  

              When more insulin is produced, increases in weight gain, cholesterol, blood pressure, and the risk of cancer, as well as decreased hormone production, occur. Dr. Patel states that insulin will carry out its functions in the body regardless of what creates the high state of insulin. Chronic low to high stress creates insulin resistance. The more insulin is secreted, the more the risk of chronic disease and illness increases. According to Dr. Patel, decreases in cortisol and insulin are a result of increasing efficiencies in the body which improves overall health and energy levels – beating extreme fatigue.

              Sympathetic Nervous System

                When the adrenal glands secrete epinephrine, this sympathetic hormone drives the stress response which includes breathing hard and becoming hyperaware of our surroundings.  Epinephrine is rapid-acting and is considered the fight or flight hormone. Cortisol becomes the ongoing stress maintenance remedy that is the main anti-inflammatory mechanism in the body and suppresses the damage from epinephrine.  

                When the adrenal glands are pushed forward in the day from stress, Dr. K.P. Khalsa states that the awakeness hormones are not excreted until the middle of the day.                 • Eat balanced meals. This includes a wide variety of vegetables, fruits, grains, and protein in order to provide your body with the key nutrients you need to stay healthy. Staying hydrated is also vital. Be sure to limit your alcohol intake. Drinking too much can increase your blood pressure and cause other complications. 
                • Make regular exercise a priority habit. Not only does exercise help you maintain your weight, but it also helps reduce your risk of heart disease by reducing the chance of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes type 2. All of which are enormous contributors to heart disease.
                • Do not smoke. Smoking is the number one cause of preventable death. It damages almost all of your body functions. The great news, though, is that it only takes one day for your body to begin repairing the damages done once you have quit smoking.
                • Effectively and consistently care for diagnosed health concerns.                   Testing for causes of your exhaustion is important.

                  The next leg of our journey through Exhausted!, Part 4, addresses what testing is available to determine the root cause(s) of fatigue and exhaustion. People need to advocate for their optimal wellness. They must make critical decisions about where they will find answers to what is causing their exhaustion and the necessary steps to lead a well-functioning life. For me, I’m currently participating in a three-month-long health program that first addresses detoxification to rid my body from toxins, body repair stage, and brain repair stage. I’m constantly looking for ways to improve my health and fatigue. My next step is to examine what testing is available to get to the root cause of my exhaustion so that I can live an energy-filled life. Let’s take a closer look at the testing options that can make a major difference in promoting a more balanced and energized life free from constant exhaustion.

                  Testing for Fatigue

                  Using an integrative approach is the best way to assess what metabolic and physiological processes are affected as well as determine the individualized treatment plan that will address the root cause of exhaustion.                   Stool Test

                  Wall Sit Test

                  The wall sit test measures the length of time you can stay against the wall. This test determines the person’s metabolic capacity as it relates to the energetic capacity of the lower limbs.

                  Pushups

                  Pushups are used to determine upper body strength.

                  Balance Test

                  The balance test is time-tested and determines the body’s ability to ‘see’ where it is in space while eyes are closed and one foot is lifted.

It can also be tested by having the patient lie in bed with the head flat for a minimum of 3 minutes, preferably 5. Measure the blood pressure and the pulse while the patient is supine. Instruct the patient to sit for 1 minute. Ask the patient about dizziness, weakness, or visual changes associated with position change.

                  After complete blood, saliva, urine, and/or stool testing, a person’s key cause(s) of exhaustion is assessed and an appropriate individualized treatment program can be instituted to restore balance to the body.
